If nail day scares you, you're in good company

In a study of clients at a subsidized grooming program, nail trimming was the task owners felt least sure about, and 45% named fear of hurting their pet as a barrier. Read the study.

Bad light makes you guess. In a dim room it's hard to see where the nail ends and the quick starts.

A fresh cut leaves an edge. That rough tip snags on carpet, furniture and you.

So the trim gets skipped. Then you're paying about $10 to $30 per visit for a job that takes minutes. Typical US prices.

“I'd clip the tip first, then flip the tool over to smooth the edge with the built-in grinder. The LED lights up the nail while you line up the cut.”

Animation showing how to find the quick and where to trim a cat claw

Cut the tip. Leave the quick alone.

Animation showing how to find the quick and where to trim a cat claw

The quick is the living part of the nail. Cut into it and the nail bleeds and hurts, so every trim is about staying past it.

Light nails: you can see the pink. Stay well clear of it.

Dark nails: even with the LED you can't see the quick. Take tiny snips from the tip and stop early.

Cats: press the paw pad gently to extend the nail, then take about 1 to 2 mm off the tip.

What the safety guard can and can't do

Plenty of listings sell the guard as a promise. Here is what it does on a real paw.

It can

  • Limit how far the nail goes into the cutting head
  • Let you see the nail, since it's clear

It can't

  • Find the quick for you. It sets a limit, and the quick sits in a different spot on every nail.
  • Replace small snips. Your eyes and a light hand still do the work.

The grinder is what we use on the dog. The cat gets a few clips at a time and that's it

Samantha Andrews

This is going in the bag when we go to my parents' at Christmas. Between them and us there's five pets

Benjamin Olson

Showed up right on the day it was supposed to

Gavin Patterson

I'd give the clipper a five and the grinder a three, so here we are.

Tyler Wu

I checked the mail, charged it and trimmed a paw before my afternoon break was over.

Cecilia Bailey

Delivered to the building office instead of the door. Once I picked it up it was all good apart from the handle being a bit slick

Jose Medina

Really like the clean snip these make

Cassandra Jones

Great for my old pup 🐶

Ashley Ramirez

Got ours before the estimated date and it survived a very enthusiastic unboxing by my kid

Craig Ford

my mom wants mine now

Bianca Burke

Used it on a foster cat who was already on edge. I only did the sharpest two and she didn't try to bolt

Xavier Lee

Not gonna lie, the light is the reason I bought it. The clipper turned out to be nicer than the one I'd been using too.

Mariah Carpenter

Came sooner than the treats I ordered with it. Didn't need them for the clipper, turns out :)

Wendy Howell

Took it out of the shipping box and put it straight in the camper. The size is right for us, especially since there's nowhere to stash a second tool in there.

Felix Alexander

got here earlier than the tracking said

Valeria Herrera

good size

Juan Matthews

my dog didnt mind it at all

Ariana Graham

We did the puppy's nails yesterday. He wanted to chew on the handle, but the light didn't bother him

Miguel Lowe

Love the lamp part. It's bright enough under the bench where our dog hangs out.

Jill Dixon

Got here a little later than I'd hoped, but I got through both pets' front paws on the first charge

Logan Torres

Worked on our little dog and didn't scare her. That's all I ask.

Yvonne Phillips

Clipper's fine. Price was a bit much for how little I end up using the file.

Carmen Lewis

Delivery was a day late but everything worked when I charged it. Liked it enough to take my old clippers out of the grooming bin.

Elizabeth Huang

Nice on the thick claw our cat keeps forgetting to wear down

Gabriel Meyer

The light points straight where I need it to

Ashley Hughes

Cuts just fine. Would love a smaller handle

Barbara Gutierrez

worked out of the box after a little charge

Elijah Huang

I did a couple of claws while my cat was curled up next to me. She stretched out instead of moving away, so I did another.

Riley Reed

Nice and sharp. Cleaned up our kitten's nails in no time

Alejandra Cannon

solid little trimmer, no issues

Andrea Perry

I got a little carried away comparing battery numbers on my first few uses. Still haven't had to plug it in again.

Madison Andrews

Gives me a good view of the nail from my angle on the floor

Colin Norton

Good on small dog nails

Wesley Webb

Much better than the one I left at my sister's by accident

Nicole Cruz

The file knocks the point off neatly. I wouldn't have bothered to file them with a separate thing

Ryan Lynch

It was supposed to come Friday and I got it Monday. Tracking gave me the same update for three days, which was annoying because I'd planned to try it over the weekend. I finally used it on our poodle after work. The light is better than what I had before and the blade cut clean. Four stars mostly for how long I spent wondering where it was.

Brandon Fernandez

My puppy's nails were catching on the mat by his crate. Used the clipper on the two long ones and the grinder on one rough corner. I thought he'd be more interested in the sound but he just wanted his toy back. We ended up doing the other front foot after dinner. Both went way better than our last attempt with the clippers from his starter kit.

Amir Medina

It's basically our weekend routine now. Coffee for me, snacks and two front paws for her.

Patrick Sutton

Tracking said delivered a day before I actually saw it. The tool is fine. The light wasn't as helpful as I expected.

Sydney Coleman

Grips well even when I hold it closer to the end

Melissa Bryant

Works great after a bath when he's dried off and already worn out from all the excitement.

William Foster

packaging was good, no loose bits rattling around

Logan Lane

My grandma has our old cat now. I got this for her because she had a hard time seeing the claws when he was on her lap watching TV. She used to hold a flashlight under her arm, no idea how she managed it. She called me after the second try and said she'd done the nails that snag on her sweater. Those were the ones she was worried about.

Mateo Gibson

I can trim our cat while she's on the bed instead of taking her to the window.

Deborah Ford

The battery lasted long enough to get both dogs and our cat done, with a snack break for all three in the middle.

Cassandra Palmer

Nice little combo. Saves me hunting for the file again...

Matthew Hudson

Had it on the kitchen counter for about an hour before my daughter asked if we could do the cat's nails. She held the treats. I did the claws. Nobody lost a finger.

Priya Hill

Decent. Hard for me to read the numbers in the sunlight

Jasmine Barker

Bought it for my new puppy and I keep finding uses for it on the older dog too. He's got longer fur down there, so I move that back and point the light under my thumb.

Karen Rice

The cut edges looked good. My wife even said I could do it again next time lol

Delia Martinez

Your first trim at home

Four short steps. Go slow, and count one nail as a win.

  1. Handle the paws first

For a few days, touch the paws at a calm moment and give a treat.

  2. Pick a sleepy moment

Good light, a treat within reach, styptic powder on the table.

  3. Clip, then smooth

Snip the tip of one nail, flip the tool and smooth the edge.

  4. Stop before they do

End on a treat and finish the other nails tomorrow.

If you nick the quick

It happens, even to careful owners. Stay calm, since your pet reads your reaction.

Press styptic powder onto the nail with firm pressure for about 30 seconds. Cornstarch or flour works in a pinch, though not as well. If the bleeding won't stop, call your vet.

Skip this tool if

  • Your dog has very thick nails that won't fit the cutting head.
  • The nails are badly overgrown, cracked or curling into the pad. See your vet first.
  • Your pet panics at any paw handling. Work on handling first, and ask your vet for help.

How the options compare

Most tools clip or grind. This one does both, so you buy once and keep one thing in the drawer.

Questions before you buy

Will the guard stop me from hitting the quick?

No guard can promise that. It limits how far the nail goes in. Small snips from the tip are what keep you clear of the quick.

What if I nick the quick?

Stay calm. Press styptic powder on with firm pressure for about 30 seconds. Cornstarch or flour works in a pinch, though not as well. If the bleeding won't stop, call your vet.

Does it need charging?

Yes. It charges by USB, the cable is in the box, and the screen shows the battery left.

Can I use it on a kitten or puppy?

Yes. Take only the very tip on small nails. The tool is [OVERALL LENGTH] long.

Who should skip this tool?

Owners of dogs with very thick nails that won't fit the cutting head. If nails are badly overgrown, cracked or curling into the pad, see your vet first.

How do I trim black nails?

You can't see the quick in a dark nail, even with the LED, so take tiny snips from the tip and stop early. Trimming a little more often beats taking a lot at once.

Can I do this alone?

You can, though a second pair of hands helps with a squirmy pet. Some solo owners hold a cat between their knees. Start with one nail at a sitting.

How often should I trim?

Many dogs need a trim every few weeks, and indoor pets that don't wear their nails down may need it sooner. If you hear clicking on a hard floor, it's time. Your vet can set a schedule for your pet.

Where does it ship from, and how long does it take?

[SHIPS FROM]. Orders leave within [HANDLING DAYS] and arrive in [DELIVERY DAYS].

Where is it made, and what if it doesn't work for my pet?

Made in [COUNTRY OF ORIGIN]. Send it back within 30 days for a full refund. Email help@frontierpaws.com.
