If nail day scares you, you're in good company

In a study of clients at a subsidized grooming program, nail trimming was the task owners felt least sure about, and 45% named fear of hurting their pet as a barrier. Read the study.

Bad light makes you guess. In a dim room it's hard to see where the nail ends and the quick starts.

A fresh cut leaves an edge. That rough tip snags on carpet, furniture and you.

So the trim gets skipped. Then you're paying about $10 to $30 per visit for a job that takes minutes. Typical US prices.

“I'd clip the tip first, then flip the tool over to smooth the edge with the built-in grinder. The LED lights up the nail while you line up the cut.”

Animation showing how to find the quick and where to trim a cat claw

Cut the tip. Leave the quick alone.

Animation showing how to find the quick and where to trim a cat claw

The quick is the living part of the nail. Cut into it and the nail bleeds and hurts, so every trim is about staying past it.

Light nails: you can see the pink. Stay well clear of it.

Dark nails: even with the LED you can't see the quick. Take tiny snips from the tip and stop early.

Cats: press the paw pad gently to extend the nail, then take about 1 to 2 mm off the tip.

What the safety guard can and can't do

Plenty of listings sell the guard as a promise. Here is what it does on a real paw.

It can

  • Limit how far the nail goes into the cutting head
  • Let you see the nail, since it's clear

It can't

  • Find the quick for you. It sets a limit, and the quick sits in a different spot on every nail.
  • Replace small snips. Your eyes and a light hand still do the work.

Just used it for the first time. Clipped better than our pet store pair and the grinding side rounded a corner off with one little pass.

Justin Kim

I ordered it for our older cat and it's nice for the foster kittens too. The little claws are easy to see with the light.

Fiona Young

We tried it on one of the back nails our dog always pulls away on. I got the tip off before he could tuck his foot in. Happy with that.

Riley Carr

My old pair would kind of split the tip on the thick nail. This one got through it in one go.

Brenda Foster

My cat's claws used to snag on the fuzzy throw even after I cut them. One pass with the other end made a difference.

Mateo Adams

I mostly use the clipper but tried the grinder today. The dog took a minute to get used to it and then just lay there.

Charles Aguilar

Our greyhound gets fussy if we hold one foot for too long. I used the clipper for all four feet and then came back for the two nails that needed smoothing. We do it on the couch because that's where he parks himself after a walk. I used to have to drag a lamp over first. Now I can actually start as soon as he's settled.

Cole Byrd

good for our little schnauzer

Wesley Wright

My order was dropped off with the rest of our mail. Happy it didn't come in one of those huge boxes

Erin Long

good clean cut on some pretty thick nails

Ian Snyder

Small, sharp, easy to grab

Ava Goodwin

The box was small enough for the mail slot. That saved me a trip to the pickup desk.

Vivian Byrd

Arrived the morning we left for my sister's, so it went straight in the dog bag

Paul Gonzalez

Way easier to see the very end of the white nails.

Maya Ruiz

Our dog holds his paw up when he wants a treat. I can sneak a clip in before he puts it down again.

Danielle Ross

The grinder took the point off the one nail that was scratching my shins. Good enough for me!

Julia Price

I hadn't used a grinder before and figured it out with no trouble.

Lori Morris

Very handy 👍

Yvonne Payne

I like that I can leave the grinder off most of the time and still have it there if a nail feels sharp.

Oscar Brooks

Not crazy about the vibration. My dog has done okay with another grinder before and he wouldn't let this one near a second nail.

Ian Dixon

Ordered late Sunday and had it by Wednesday. I used the grinder on two nails before he decided it was time to go outside.

Leo Myers

The light was a little too bright when I set it down facing me. Good when it's on the actual paw.

Ricardo Barrett

Even my husband can get the nail in the right spot with these

William Ferguson

The cut was good and straight. Didn't need the file on most of her nails

George Zhang

The cleanest clip I've managed on Oscar's front feet.

Fatima Jenkins

I like the display. Turns out I don't need to charge it as often as I thought

George Lin

Took 4 days to get here. Used it that night with no issues.

Nicole Sutton

This arrived before our puppy came home, which was lucky. The first thing he did was put his paws on my face and wow those nails.

Cameron Wells

I ordered it Sunday morning and it was waiting for me when I got home Wednesday. Had a go on my cat right away.

April Benson

It came on the day they said it would. Unboxed fine, little cord was there, no surprises.

Amir Meyer

Love being able to see how much of the nail is past the blade.

Xavier Carroll

I got both front paws done before my cat was done with her snack

Walter Thompson

My cat gives me about a minute. I can do three or four nails with this, then the grind is a whole other negotiation.

Eddie Wagner

First attempt: cat asleep. Second attempt: cat suddenly very awake. Got the whole foot the first time though!

Jeremy Kelly

Great for my frenchie

Claire Benson

Solid trimmer for a small dog.

Patricia Ruiz

You can read the screen without tilting it straight at your face. I'm old and I appreciate that.

Leo Miller

Love it for Junie's nails!

Cynthia Robinson

Love these clippers! We have two dogs and a cat so they're already getting used a lot

Andrew West

I do like having the two ends, but it feels a little unwieldy when I flip it one-handed

Phoebe Phillips

Good for those little nails that catch on the couch pillows.

Lisa Hayes

Works fine on the back claw my old pair kept slipping off

Wendy Romero

My cat's review: how dare you. Mine: 5 stars

Bailey Baldwin

Arrived clean, no dents. I never know what I'm going to get when little things come in a big mailer.

Ricardo Porter

No more trying to use the flashlight on my phone while it goes to sleep every thirty seconds

Sonia Gomez

Parcel was on the porch two days earlier than the estimate. My son opened it thinking it was his charger and left it on the counter. I tried it on our tabby that night while we watched a movie. Did the front feet during the opening credits and waited until she fell asleep for the back. She was over it by then, but I got the two claws that were catching on the chair

Eddie Rodriguez

Easy to turn around for the odd nail that needs the grinder

Gabriel Wilson

It did the thing! No fuss from my dog, for once

Xavier Graham

The box showed up a little banged up. The tool was snug in there and fine. Wouldn't even mention it if my dog hadn't spent an hour carrying the empty box around. I clipped a couple nails while he was chewing on it and he didn't notice until I moved on to his back foot. Guess I know what to give him next time 😂

Vincent Clark

Tried it on the couch while Dot was wedged under my leg. All front toes done :)

Valeria Butler

I use the light more than the grinder. It shows me the outline without me having to turn the paw very far.

Dylan Rogers

The shipping box was fine. i could see the nail clearly enough, but my hand got tired before I finished the second paw

Carmen Gonzalez

Arrived fast, no issue there. The cutter is easy. Took me a couple tries to find a comfortable way to hold the other end.

Eduardo Herrera

I leave mine by the lint roller. If the cat's in a good mood I can get a couple nails done and put it away before she changes her mind.

Rose Wood

A touch top heavy for me. My husband likes it.

Jack Bishop

I did the little nail on the side of his foot, then showed my daughter the light because she didn't believe it was built in

Riley Lin

Your first trim at home

Four short steps. Go slow, and count one nail as a win.

  1. Handle the paws first

For a few days, touch the paws at a calm moment and give a treat.

  2. Pick a sleepy moment

Good light, a treat within reach, styptic powder on the table.

  3. Clip, then smooth

Snip the tip of one nail, flip the tool and smooth the edge.

  4. Stop before they do

End on a treat and finish the other nails tomorrow.

If you nick the quick

It happens, even to careful owners. Stay calm, since your pet reads your reaction.

Press styptic powder onto the nail with firm pressure for about 30 seconds. Cornstarch or flour works in a pinch, though not as well. If the bleeding won't stop, call your vet.

Skip this tool if

  • Your dog has very thick nails that won't fit the cutting head.
  • The nails are badly overgrown, cracked or curling into the pad. See your vet first.
  • Your pet panics at any paw handling. Work on handling first, and ask your vet for help.

How the options compare

Most tools clip or grind. This one does both, so you buy once and keep one thing in the drawer.

Questions before you buy

Will the guard stop me from hitting the quick?

No guard can promise that. It limits how far the nail goes in. Small snips from the tip are what keep you clear of the quick.

What if I nick the quick?

Stay calm. Press styptic powder on with firm pressure for about 30 seconds. Cornstarch or flour works in a pinch, though not as well. If the bleeding won't stop, call your vet.

Does it need charging?

Yes. It charges by USB, the cable is in the box, and the screen shows the battery left.

Can I use it on a kitten or puppy?

Yes. Take only the very tip on small nails. The tool is [OVERALL LENGTH] long.

Who should skip this tool?

Owners of dogs with very thick nails that won't fit the cutting head. If nails are badly overgrown, cracked or curling into the pad, see your vet first.

How do I trim black nails?

You can't see the quick in a dark nail, even with the LED, so take tiny snips from the tip and stop early. Trimming a little more often beats taking a lot at once.

Can I do this alone?

You can, though a second pair of hands helps with a squirmy pet. Some solo owners hold a cat between their knees. Start with one nail at a sitting.

How often should I trim?

Many dogs need a trim every few weeks, and indoor pets that don't wear their nails down may need it sooner. If you hear clicking on a hard floor, it's time. Your vet can set a schedule for your pet.

Where does it ship from, and how long does it take?

[SHIPS FROM]. Orders leave within [HANDLING DAYS] and arrive in [DELIVERY DAYS].

Where is it made, and what if it doesn't work for my pet?

Made in [COUNTRY OF ORIGIN]. Send it back within 30 days for a full refund. Email help@frontierpaws.com.
